The forest of central Portugal is reviewed
under two perspectives, production and protection. Two main
productive species are presented, Pinus pinaster, Ait. and
Eucalyptus globulus, Labill., referring the area and trends
of occupation, their ecological behaviour and the characteristics
which made them interesting. A silviculture model is presented
for both species. The protection function is described in
terms of the species of a Natural Reserve, the land uses
practiced there and some aspects of the management of Quercus
pyrennaica Willd. (together with Q. rotundifolia Lam. and Q. suber L., also presents,
the very old Mediterranean species). Natural species are
listed as well as those introduced. The need for a management
plan that responds both to the protection objectives and the
interests of the people in neighbouring villages is also
pointed out.
